Custom carpentry + exterior painting

Late-1800s Home — Custom Porch Columns

The original porch had plain metal posts that did not match the character of this late-1800s home. Daltonn’s Painting & Handyman Services designed and built custom column wraps, then prepared and painted the new work as part of the home’s restoration.

The project

Bring the porch columns back into the home’s architectural story.

The original porch had plain metal posts that did not match the character of this late-1800s home. Daltonn’s Painting & Handyman Services designed and built custom column wraps, then prepared and painted the new work as part of the home’s restoration.

Plinth-style bases, built-out trim, and layered crown details gave the porch stronger architectural character while connecting the columns to the restored exterior, blue porch ceiling, and finished entry.

Design + construction

Not a stock post. A column profile built for this porch.

The new wraps were developed around the proportions and character of the home, then assembled through the base, shaft, trim, and crown before the finish work began.

Architectural detail

The shape came from layers—not one piece of trim.

The finished columns combine several deliberate details that separate a basic cover from restoration-minded carpentry.

  • Replaced the visual effect of plain metal porch posts with custom wood column wraps
  • Built plinth-style bases at the bottom of the columns
  • Added built-out trim work through the column profiles
  • Created layered crown details with 1x material and inverted base-cap molding
  • Caulked and primed the completed carpentry
  • Painted the wraps and trim for a clean exterior finish
